Reddit is a social media platform that enables people to create communities, also known as subreddits, with people of similar motivations.
The platform supports text and audio-visual content and empowers people to express themselves without fear as it encourages people to post using anonymous aliases.
It is mainly used by people in the age group of 16-40 and operates at a global level.
When thinking about the purposes people use Reddit for, the following segments come to mind.
Social/Entertainment goals
This is the largest segment of users by far and can be described as people who are casually using Reddit for their social and entertainment needs.
They log in to the platform anywhere from 3-4 times a day to once a week and are mostly interested in consuming content and commenting/engaging with posts.
Entrepreneurial goals
This is also a fairly large segment but smaller than the first one. This constitutes of people who are primarily interested in creating content for the first segment. They want to create a following/community of people interested in their content and might or might not want monetary gain from it. They try to follow global trends and engage more with people to create a better reach.
Seeking answers
This segment consists of people who use the platform to gain some insights or answers to questions they might have. This segment also consists of people who use Reddit as a way to perform User Research for their professional needs.
Businesses
These are mainly companies/businesses who are looking to advertise their products through Reddit to their target customers. They engage with Reddit and provide a set of target consumers and expect creative freedom in creating their ad content. They will continue to use Reddit for this purpose as long as they get new customers from it.
These are the main segments I could think of. If you think I missed someone out or if there is a different type of segmentation possible based on some other factors, do let me know in the comments.
Have a nice day!
